IFR: an alternative to FIR

Hey, this post is vintage content. It dates back more than 20 years ago: it may contain outdated and inaccurate information.

FIR ? a standards-compliant technique, devised by Todd Fahrner and popularised by Douglas Bowman and Jeffrey Zeldman, which allows part of the text on a web page to be replaced with an image, using style sheets and simple HTML.

To FIR have been added another methods to achieve similar results, each with advantages and shortcomings of its own.

The Web, however, never stops, and so Shaun Inman has found another solution to the problem that however requires Javascript and Flash: IFR (Inman Flash Replacement). Although more complex than the other techniques, Shaun's deserves attention because it eliminates the repetitive work of manually creating images to replace text.
